The Van Gogh Museum – Amsterdam, Netherlands

This museum tops the Louvre if you look at the European charts. The museum was opened in 1973 and displays works from Vincent Van Gogh and his contemporaries. It has over 1,300 of Van Gogh’s works and is one of the most pleasant museums to visit. Similarly to the Louvre, it owes a lot of its reputation to the name of Van Gogh, even though over the years, their number of visitors increased progressively, with 2016 and 2017 having seen over 2 million visitors.

State Hermitage – St. Petersburg, Russia

The State Hermitage museum is the second largest museum in terms of gallery space, second only to the Louvre, coming with 66,842 square meters of gallery space. The museum was established long ago, in 1764, but was opened to the public almost a hundred years later, in 1852. With well over 4 million visitors, it is the biggest attraction in St. Petersburg.

It houses over 3 million different painting, taking the first place as having the largest collection of paintings on display. The number of painters who have their art in the museum is huge, Van Gogh, Rembrandt, Rubens, Renoir, Picasso, Matisse, Gauguin, Kandinsky, to name a few.

Vatican Museums – Vatican City, Rome, Italy

The Vatican Museums are the 5th largest museums in the world, with over 43,000 square meters of gallery space. They are located in Vatican City, in Rome, Italy. Even though the museum can be traced back to 1506, it was actually opened to the public in 1854, changing buildings and adding more locations during the years leading up to the present day.

There are plenty of things to see in the Vatican Museums, starting with the Sistine Chapel and the famous Sistine Chapel Ceiling, painted by Michelangelo. Many other artists’ works are to be found in the Vatican Museums, such as those of da Vinci, Giotto di Bondone, Raphael, Caravaggio, Titian, and many more.
